Airdrop refers to a method of distribution of cryptocurrency or tokens to wallets on a particular blockchain. It is usually done for marketing purposes to incentivize the token holder to become a participant in the blockchain network.

# What is Airdrop?

Most often airdrop activities run with mechanics such as receiving coins or tokens in exchange for participating on campaigns, referring friends or downloading an application.

## The two kinds of airdrop

Retroactive airdrops reward people for something they already did — used a protocol before it had a token, provided liquidity, bridged assets early. There's nothing to do in advance; the snapshot has already happened by the time it's announced. Task-based airdrops go the other way: a project publishes a checklist (follow socials, make a swap, hold a minimum balance for N days) before the token exists, hoping the activity looks organic. Most large 2021-2024 airdrops (Uniswap, Arbitrum, Jupiter) were retroactive; most task-based campaigns since have drawn heavy Sybil-farming and many end up excluding wallets that only did the minimum.

## What actually disqualifies a wallet

Projects that publish eligibility criteria almost always exclude: wallets that only interacted once at the bare minimum threshold, wallets funded from the same source as hundreds of others (a Sybil cluster), and wallets that interacted purely through automation. None of this is guaranteed — every project sets its own rules, and many change the rules after the fact. Treat any airdrop as a possible bonus for real usage, never as income to plan around.

## The scam version

A legitimate airdrop never asks for your seed phrase, never asks you to send tokens first to "unlock" a larger amount, and never requires connecting your wallet to an unfamiliar site to "claim." Unsolicited tokens showing up in your wallet from a project you've never heard of are usually a phishing lure — the token itself often links to a malicious site if you try to trade or check its value. Verify a claim through the project's own official channel, not a link in the token's metadata.
