# All Time High (ATH)

All time high refers to the highest price that an asset has reached on an exchange. The all time high value represents the maximum price that a trader was willing to buy that asset for during that period.

# What is All Time High

The all time high is often quoted in financial assets since it shows the theoretical potential of the asset. However, there is no guarantee that the asset will be back at its all time high again.

## Why most assets never see their old ATH again

An all-time high is a snapshot of the exact moment demand peaked relative to supply — it says nothing about whether that demand returns. Bitcoin has set and broken new ATHs across multiple cycles; the majority of assets that ran hard in a single bull market never revisit that level, because the ATH was priced on narrative and liquidity conditions that don't recur. Treating a past ATH as a "discount" ("it's 80% off its ATH, so it's cheap") ignores that the ATH itself may have been the anomaly, not the current price.

## ATH vs ATL, and why both matter

All-time low (ATL) is the mirror figure — the lowest price ever recorded. Reading the two together says more than either alone: an asset trading near its ATH with a shallow ATL suggests sustained demand; one trading near its ATL after a distant ATH suggests the market has largely written it off. Neither figure predicts what happens next — they describe the past, not a forecast.
