- Description: A store of value must keep its worth over time. How bitcoin's 21 million coin cap and the volatility objection stand up, with Bernstein's June 2026 view.

The IJERT essay “Is Bitcoin a Store of Value?” defines a store of value as “an asset that can be saved, retrieved, and exchanged in the future without deteriorating in value.” It names volatility as one of the primary criticisms of bitcoin on that test. On scarcity, it and CoinLedger both point to a cap of 21 million coins. In June 2026, Bernstein analysts said bitcoin's long-term store-of-value thesis is unchanged, Bitcoin Magazine and CryptoProwl reported.

**Key facts**

- **Definition (IJERT essay):** An asset that can be saved, retrieved and exchanged later without deteriorating in value.
- **Five tests (IJERT essay):** Durability, scarcity, portability, divisibility and recognizability.
- **Supply cap (IJERT, CoinLedger):** 21 million coins, the basis of bitcoin's scarcity case.
- **Main objection (IJERT essay):** Volatility, one of the primary criticisms of bitcoin as a store of value.
- **Broker view (Bernstein, June 2026):** The long-term store-of-value thesis is unchanged.

## What a store of value has to do

The demanding part of the IJERT definition is time. The value must not deteriorate between the day an owner saves the asset and the day they exchange it. That makes a store of value something judged over a holding period, not on a single day. It is also the condition the main objection to bitcoin targets.

## Scarcity: the 21 million coin cap

Two of the sources make the scarcity case with the same number. The IJERT essay says bitcoin's scarcity rests on a [hardcoded cap of 21 million coins](https://www.ijert.org/is-bitcoin-a-store-of-value?ref=zipmex.com). It calls the cap a major factor in bitcoin's value proposition. CoinLedger, in an educational article, says bitcoin's supply is [permanently capped at 21 million coins](https://coinledger.io/learn/what-is-bitcoin-backed-by?ref=zipmex.com). A cap limits how many coins can exist. It does not set what each coin is worth.

## Volatility: the main objection

The IJERT essay calls volatility one of the primary criticisms of bitcoin as a store of value. It also reports the answer from bitcoin's proponents. They argue volatility will decrease as the market matures and adoption increases. That is a forecast, not a measured result. Set side by side, the five tests and this objection show where the sources give a figure for bitcoin and where its case is disputed.

The table restates each source's position on a test and gives no overall verdict on bitcoin.

## Value as an expectation: the Krawisz view (opinion)

Daniel Krawisz questioned the term itself in an [opinion essay dated Jan. 12, 2015](https://nakamotoinstitute.org/mempool/bitcoin-as-a-store-of-value-unit-of-account-and-medium-of-exchange/?ref=zipmex.com), on the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute site. His position is that “Bitcoin is the kind of money that works in an unstable world.” He called “store of value” a “terrible metaphor.” In his view, value is an expectation about how much people want something. A good stores value only if “everyone wants it so badly that it will be snapped up even at a tiny discount.” He traced bitcoin's fear and volatility to doubt about how much the rest of the market believes in it.

## The gold comparison and the adoption objection

CoinLedger says supporters believe bitcoin is a better store of value than gold and traditional currencies. That is a belief it reports, not a test it runs. Krawisz answered the critics directly in his 2015 essay. He wrote that calling bitcoin a poor store of value really means bitcoin is not being adopted yet. He called that complaint invalid. This too is his opinion.

## What Bernstein said in June 2026

Analysts at the Wall Street brokerage Bernstein said bitcoin's long-term store-of-value thesis is unchanged, [Bitcoin Magazine reported](https://bitcoinmagazine.com/markets/bitcoin-holds-near-63000-as-analysts?ref=zipmex.com) in a story retrieved Oct. 14, 2026\. [CryptoProwl](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/bernstein-says-bitcoin-store-value-135400617.html?ref=zipmex.com), carried on Yahoo Finance on June 8, 2026, relayed the same report. It said the view holds despite a slower capital allocation cycle and less retail investor activity. It quoted the note directly: “Bitcoin being boring this cycle should not be held against it.”

## The figures in the note

Bitcoin Magazine's account of the note gives three figures. Net inflows into spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and corporate treasury companies came to $12 billion for 2026 so far, as of the June 2026 note. For 2025, the same flows were $60 billion. The two figures cover different periods. The note also found that 61% of bitcoin's circulating supply had not moved in more than a year. CryptoProwl's account puts net outflows from ETFs at about $2.6 billion in 2026 to date. On that reading, most of the selling came from crypto treasury companies.

## What the sources state and what they do not

Two sources state the 21 million coin cap: the IJERT essay and CoinLedger. Neither gives a source for it. Neither carries a publication date. They were retrieved on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14, 2026\. Two outlets relay the Bernstein view. Both describe the same note. Neither publishes the note itself. The 61% reading appears only in Bitcoin Magazine's account. Krawisz wrote in 2015, before any of the 2026 figures. None of the sources tests whether bitcoin beats gold. None shows volatility falling as adoption grows.

## Analysis: what the test comes down to

The IJERT essay and CoinLedger both state a 21 million coin cap. Neither source tests what the cap does to value over time. The stability question rests on other arguments. Two of the answers to the volatility objection tie stability to adoption. The proponents IJERT describes expect volatility to fall as adoption grows. Krawisz said the store-of-value complaint is really about adoption. Bernstein, separately, judges the thesis on the long term rather than on one cycle. A saver relying on the stability half of the thesis is relying on adoption continuing. Someone holding for years faces a different question from someone weighing [crypto day trading](https://zipmex.com/blog/crypto-day-trading-how-a-trade-works-what-it-costs-and-three-checks-first/).

## Next step: what to check and where to read more

No dated next event is set in these sources. When a newer flow figure appears, compare its date with the June 2026 note before setting it beside the $12 billion figure. The IJERT essay sets out each of the five tests in its own words. The Krawisz essay, dated Jan. 12, 2015, gives his full argument that a good stores value only when everyone wants it. For anyone holding coins as savings, a separate explainer covers which of the [public and private keys in crypto](https://zipmex.com/blog/public-keys-let-crypto-arrive-private-keys-sign-and-spend-it/) to keep secret.
