Crypto day trading means opening and closing positions [within minutes or hours](https://cryptoslate.com/guides/what-is-day-trading-crypto/?ref=zipmex.com), according to a beginner guide CryptoSlate dated June 10, 2026\. The trader is after a short-term price move, not a long-term holding. That move has to be large enough to cover fees, spread, slippage, taxes and mistakes. A Coursera guide defines day trading as buying and selling within the [same 24-hour period](https://www.coursera.org/articles/how-to-trade-cryptocurrency?ref=zipmex.com). Its page data dates it Jan. 23, 2025, though the guide's text carries no date.

**Key facts from CryptoSlate's guide**

- **Time frame:** Positions open and close within minutes or hours.
- **Goal:** A short-term move large enough to cover fees, spread, slippage, taxes and mistakes.
- **Fees:** Maker orders add liquidity and typically cost less. Taker orders remove it and often cost more.
- **Leverage:** It can force a position into liquidation before the trader chooses to exit.
- **Profit:** Possible for some skilled traders, but never guaranteed.

## Three checks before a setup gets money

CryptoSlate frames the go or no-go decision as [three questions](https://cryptoslate.com/guides/what-is-day-trading-crypto/?ref=zipmex.com). First, would the expected move still be big enough after costs? Second, is there "enough liquidity to exit cleanly"? Third, is the trade record clear enough to review and to use for taxes? It says all three must pass before a setup deserves capital. A separate explainer covers what [crypto tax reporting](https://zipmex.com/blog/crypto-tax-what-triggers-reporting-and-which-irs-forms-apply/) involves.

## Is this day trade ready for money?

Answer CryptoSlate's three checks for a setup you are planning and see whether it is ready for capital.

1. After fees, spread and slippage, would the expected move still be big enough?

  - Yes → [next question](#ix-q%5Fliquidity)
  - No → [Not ready: costs](#ix-out%5Fcost)

2. Does the market have enough liquidity for you to get out of the position?

  - Yes → [next question](#ix-q%5Frecord)
  - No → [Not ready: exit](#ix-out%5Fliquidity)

3. Would your trade record be clear enough to review later and to use for taxes?

  - No → [Not ready: records](#ix-out%5Frecord)

4. Do you plan to use leverage or a trading bot on this setup?

  - Yes → [Wait on leverage](#ix-out%5Fleverage)
  - No → [Passed the three checks](#ix-out%5Fready)

**Not ready: costs**

The move would not cover its costs. CryptoSlate says a setup deserves capital only when all three checks pass.

**Not ready: exit**

The exit is in doubt. CryptoSlate counts enough liquidity for the exit as one of three checks that must pass before capital.

**Not ready: records**

The record would not hold up. CryptoSlate wants a trade record clear enough for review and taxes before capital goes in.

**Wait on leverage**

CryptoSlate advises adding leverage and bots only after manual results are consistent. It says leverage can force liquidation before the trader is ready to exit.

**Passed the three checks**

The setup clears all three checks. CryptoSlate's advice is to paper trade one strategy for at least 20 trades first. After that comes tiny real-money size, with a journal of every result.

The checks are one guide's advice, and passing them does not show that a trade will make money.

## How one trade runs, from signal to record

CryptoSlate treats a chart signal as the start of a trade, not the whole of it. The trade ends only after three steps. First, the order fills. Second, the exit closes. Third, the record is saved. Order type matters at the first step. A limit order that never fills avoids a bad price. It also misses the trade entirely.

## Why crypto is not stock day trading

Coursera says crypto is open to traders around the clock. Stock trading happens only during limited hours. It also says crypto is not regulated everywhere. Its market future is uncertain. That mix makes its value notoriously volatile. CryptoSlate adds two more differences. Liquidity is split across venues. Most trades use stablecoin pairs instead of national currencies.

## Costs: maker, taker, spread and slippage

CryptoSlate says fee schedules usually split orders into two kinds. A **maker order** adds liquidity and typically costs less. A **taker order** removes liquidity and often costs more. Spread and slippage come on top of the fee. A small intraday target leaves little room for this friction.

## Leverage, attention and profit

CryptoSlate says leverage can force a position into liquidation before the trader is ready to exit. Day trading crypto can pay off for some skilled traders, it says, but profit is never guaranteed. A separate explainer covers how [cross and isolated margin](https://zipmex.com/blog/crypto-liquidation-risk-in-menthorqs-example-a-drop-of-about-10-ends-a-tenfold-long/) change liquidation risk.

Coursera says day trading "requires high levels of attention and energy." Some traders find it hard to balance with other parts of life. A separate guide covers a slower route: [how to invest in crypto](https://zipmex.com/blog/how-to-navigate-crypto-in-2026-expert-strategies/) with limits and risk controls.

## Pattern day trading rules and practice first

CryptoSlate says U.S. pattern day trading rules apply to securities margin accounts. It also gives a practice sequence, offered as its advice. Step one is paper trading a single strategy for at least 20 trades before risking real money. Step two is placing tiny real-money trades and keeping a journal of every result. Step three adds leverage and bots only once manual results are consistent.

## Analysis: what a chart does not show

The chart only opens the trade. Costs are paid on the way in and again on the way out. The order has to fill, and a limit order may not. The record has to hold up later. On a small target, each of these eats into the same thin margin. The three checks work as a filter because they test the parts a chart does not show.

## What is confirmed and what is not

Both guides describe day trading as a short holding period, from minutes to a single day. Both say crypto trades without the fixed hours of the stock market. Only CryptoSlate sets out the three checks, the maker and taker fee split, the leverage warning and the practice steps. Only Coursera describes the attention and energy load. Neither guide gives current fees, spreads or the share of day traders who make money. For current fees and limits, check the platform's own fee page.

> Day trading crypto is active trading that opens and closes positions over minutes or hours instead of holding through long market cycles.
