A custodial wallet is one where [a company, for example an exchange or a bank](https://agilie.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets?ref=zipmex.com), keeps the users' private keys, according to Agilie. A non-custodial wallet is one where the owner holds the keys, with [full control and responsibility](https://safeheron.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets/?ref=zipmex.com), says Safeheron. Fuse adds that the owner [controls the crypto only while](https://news.fuse.io/custodial-and-non-custodial-crypto-wallets-whats-the-difference/?ref=zipmex.com) they can reach those keys. All four sources are company blogs. Safeheron and Fuse are wallet or custody vendors. Sphinx Solution is a blockchain development company, and Agilie is an IT outsourcing firm that offers blockchain development.

## What the private key does

Agilie says a private key has two main jobs. It authorizes transactions. It also proves ownership of the assets. Fuse says a non-custodial owner controls the crypto only while they can access those keys.

## Custodial wallets: recovery and support, with a company in control

Safeheron says custodial wallets [may suit people new to crypto](https://safeheron.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets/?ref=zipmex.com). They may also suit users who want simplicity and extra services. Sphinx Solution lists [easier account recovery, customer support and convenience](https://www.sphinx-solution.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets/?ref=zipmex.com). It calls that a fit for beginners. Agilie explains the recovery. The custodian keeps the keys on its centralized server. A locked-out user can therefore get funds back.

## Non-custodial wallets: control, and no one to call

Safeheron says the owner must [remember and secure the keys](https://safeheron.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets/?ref=zipmex.com). Losing them means losing access to the assets. Sphinx Solution agrees on the outcome. A lost key has [no verification process to recover it](https://www.sphinx-solution.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets/?ref=zipmex.com). Agilie adds that these wallets need decent knowledge of blockchain and smart contracts. [Minor mistakes can lose funds](https://agilie.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets?ref=zipmex.com), and there is no refund option.

## Software and hardware options

Fuse calls MetaMask one of the most popular non-custodial wallets. It also describes a hardware wallet as arguably the safest way to keep crypto. That is an opinion, not a measured result. Sphinx Solution says hardware wallets such as Ledger or Trezor let non-custodial users reach funds offline.

## Privacy: what each type asks you to hand over

Sphinx Solution says custodial wallets often ask for personal information. That may mean identity verification, or a process known as KYC, short for know your customer. Agilie says a non-custodial wallet does not rely on KYC. The user does not have to verify their identity to make transactions.

## The risks of each type

Fuse says a custodial user [might lose their crypto](https://news.fuse.io/custodial-and-non-custodial-crypto-wallets-whats-the-difference/?ref=zipmex.com) if the exchange or crypto bank holding it goes bankrupt. Agilie calls custodial wallets [less secure than non-custodial ones](https://agilie.com/blog/custodial-vs-non-custodial-wallets?ref=zipmex.com) because they are vulnerable to cyberattacks. It also warns that attackers can still obtain a non-custodial owner's key. They can do so through malware on a computer or smartphone.

## Custodial vs. non-custodial wallets side by side

How do the two wallet types differ on key holder, recovery after a lockout, personal data and main risk?

## What the sources agree on, and what rests on one blog

Safeheron and Sphinx Solution agree on one point. A lost non-custodial key means lost access. Fuse is the only source here that names the exchange going bankrupt. Agilie states the less-secure verdict for custodial wallets in those words. Safeheron and Sphinx Solution also name hacks as a custodial risk, and both say self-held keys reduce that exposure. The malware warning for self-held keys comes from Agilie alone.

## Analysis: each type moves the risk, it does not remove it

On this reading, neither type is simply safe. Agilie calls custodial wallets less secure than non-custodial ones. Sphinx Solution frames custodial risk as centralised storage that hackers target. The custodian that can rescue a locked-out user is also the party that can fail. Fuse ties that to bankruptcy. A self-held key gives control, and it also gives sole responsibility. Malware or a mistake still costs the owner. The choice is whom to trust: a company that can help and can also fail, or themselves.

## What the sources leave out

Sphinx Solution gives figures on thefts from retail wallets and on lost bitcoin. It also remarks on fees for transfers inside a platform and on network fees. The figures are not used, because the page gives no links for them. Platform fees and limits are not stated here. Terms differ by platform and change, so check a platform's own pages. Page dates in the sources' metadata run from Nov. 18, 2022 to Feb. 25, 2025, and the page texts carry no date.
