[Bitcoin Foundation defines margin](https://bitcoinfoundation.org/news/altcoins/how-to-trade-crypto-with-leverage-what-leverage-is-and-how-to-use-it-safely/?ref=zipmex.com) as the actual capital needed to enter a position, and leverage as a capital-to-exposure ratio, such as 2X, 5X or 20X. It says leveraged trades can use borrowed money from an exchange or a liquidity pool, so a position can be larger than the account balance behind it. Margin is the collateral you post. Leverage sets how large the position is against that collateral.

Key facts, per Bitcoin Foundation and Coin Bureau

- **Margin:** the capital a trader actually posts to open a position.
- **Leverage:** a capital-to-exposure ratio, such as 2X, 5X or 20X.
- **Example:** $1,000 posted to open a $5,000 position.
- **Gain:** roughly 50% on a 10% rise, before fees.
- **Loss:** about $500 on a 10% fall, half the posted collateral.

## Two terms, one trade

[BitDegree says margin and leverage](https://www.bitdegree.org/crypto/tutorials/what-is-leverage-trading-crypto?ref=zipmex.com) are not interchangeable, although margin trading is also called leverage trading. It adds that leverage is the instrument that makes margin trading possible.

2XBitcoin Foundation defines leverage as a capital-to-exposure ratio, for example 2X, 5X or 20X.

## Borrowing and the ratio

[Coin Bureau says traders can borrow funds](https://coinbureau.com/education/cryptocurrency-margin-trading?ref=zipmex.com) to take long or short positions bigger than their own capital. The leverage ratio sets how much borrowed exposure a trader takes on. Collateral sets how much room the position has before it becomes unstable.

## A 10% move on $5,000 of exposure

[Coin Bureau's example posts](https://coinbureau.com/education/cryptocurrency-margin-trading?ref=zipmex.com) $1,000 as collateral to open a $5,000 position. A 10% rise gives roughly a 50% gain on the $1,000 before fees, because profit is figured on the full position, not the deposit. A 10% fall in the same $5,000 position costs about $500, or half the posted collateral. Enter a position size of your own to see how the same 10% move affects the $1,000 of collateral.

__Worked examples (position times price move, divided by collateral, as a percent)__
| Collateral posted | Position size | Price move | Gain on a rise or loss on a fall, as a share of collateral |
| ----------------- | ------------- | ---------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1,000 USD | 5,000 USD | 10 % | **50 %** |
| 1,000 USD | 5,000 USD | 10 % | **50 %** |
| 1,000 USD | 500 USD | 10 % | **5 %** |

- Position size is your own assumption; the Coin Bureau example uses $5,000.
- Collateral and the 10% move come from the Coin Bureau example and are before fees.

The result shows only the price effect, before fees, borrowing costs and funding payments.

## Initial and maintenance margin

[Coin Bureau defines initial margin](https://coinbureau.com/education/cryptocurrency-margin-trading?ref=zipmex.com) as the collateral needed to open a leveraged position. Maintenance margin is the lower level a trader must keep to hold that position open. A margin call is the warning stage, when the account lacks a comfortable buffer and needs more collateral or less exposure.

## When losses reach the collateral

Bitcoin Foundation says an exchange [force-closes a position](https://bitcoinfoundation.org/news/altcoins/how-to-trade-crypto-with-leverage-what-leverage-is-and-how-to-use-it-safely/?ref=zipmex.com) once its algorithms judge that losses may reach the size of the collateral, typically in under a second.

## Margin amplifies both ways

[TechJury says margin lets traders amplify positions](https://techjury.net/guides/margin-crypto-trading/?ref=zipmex.com), which raises both profit potential and the risk of rapid liquidation. It advises beginners to start with low leverage, 2x to 5x. A separate explainer covers [how to start investing as a beginner](https://zipmex.com/blog/introduction-to-investing-a-complete-beginners-guide-2026/).

## Isolated and cross margin

Coin Bureau says [isolated margin holds each position's collateral](https://coinbureau.com/education/cryptocurrency-margin-trading?ref=zipmex.com) apart from the rest of the account. Cross margin draws on a shared pool, often the broader account balance, to back open positions.

## Spot margin, perpetuals and funding

Coin Bureau says [spot margin means borrowing funds](https://coinbureau.com/education/cryptocurrency-margin-trading?ref=zipmex.com) to trade the asset itself on the spot market. Perpetual futures are derivative contracts that never expire and do not give direct ownership of the asset. A funding rate is a recurring payment between traders who hold long and short positions, designed to keep the contract price close to the spot price. It cites TokenInsight, which found that derivatives made up 82% of total crypto exchange volume in the first quarter of 2026.

## Sizing, costs and high leverage numbers

[BitDegree suggests trading around 1-2%](https://www.bitdegree.org/crypto/tutorials/what-is-leverage-trading-crypto?ref=zipmex.com) of overall portfolio value per trade and not exceeding a 5% threshold. It also says borrowing for margin or perpetual contracts has its own extra costs. It adds that traders come across numbers such as 100x, 125x or 200x on perpetual contracts.

## What is confirmed and what is not

Bitcoin Foundation and Coin Bureau both describe borrowed funds as the way a position grows past the trader's own capital, so that point has two outlets behind it. The $1,000 example comes from one guide, and its 82% share figure cites TokenInsight's report for the first quarter of 2026, which has not been checked against the original. The 100x to 200x numbers and the 1-2% sizing figure are both BitDegree's own statements. The 2x to 5x starting range is TechJury's own advice. Each of these figures is the publisher's own statement, not a verified standard.

## Analysis: why the ratio alone misleads

A leverage figure such as 200x says little until you know the collateral behind it. Collateral sets the room before a position becomes unstable, so the ratio and the collateral have to be read together. The sources' figures are examples and publishers' own statements, so they are not rules.

## What to check next

This guide does not verify current fees, borrowing rates or platform limits. The 82% figure comes from TokenInsight's exchange report for the first quarter of 2026, which has not been checked against the report itself. The Bitcoin Foundation and BitDegree pages show no date in their text, so their statements are not dated. This is educational content, not investment advice.
