[A GoMining academy guide](https://academy.gomining.com/articles/staking-vs-yield-farming-whats-the-difference?ref=zipmex.com) separates staking from yield farming by two things: what your tokens do and how much attention they need. The date March 8, 2026 appears in the guide's page metadata, not in its text. Staking locks tokens in a blockchain network so it can run securely. Yield farming, also known as liquidity mining, puts crypto into decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols in return for rewards. Once set up, staking is largely hands-off. Yield farming, it says, often rewards active management.

**Key facts from GoMining's guide**

- **Staking rates:** 3% to 12% APY (annual percentage yield) on most major proof-of-stake networks.
- **Stablecoin lending pools:** Established platforms might offer 2% to 10% APY.
- **Advertised farming rates:** 50%, 100% or even 1,000%+ APY can be advertised by newer protocols or more volatile token pairs.
- **Risk:** In DeFi, a higher yield almost always means a higher risk.
- **Withdrawals:** Many staking protocols make holders wait before their tokens can be withdrawn.

## Why the effort differs

GoMining treats staking and yield farming as two different activities. A staker sets things up once and lets them run. For yield farming, its point is that the activity often rewards active management. Blockchain Council, whose page metadata shows Dec. 30, 2021 (the body is undated), explains what that activity involves. It describes yield farming as shifting assets from one liquidity pool to another, or supplying liquidity to those pools.

## The rates GoMining gives

GoMining puts typical staking returns on most major proof-of-stake networks at 3% to 12% APY. The rate shifts with the chosen network, how much is staked overall and how busy the network is. It says stablecoin lending pools on established platforms might offer 2% to 10% APY.

## Advertised yields and what a rate means on your amount

GoMining treats advertised figures as a separate category from those ranges. In its words, "newer protocols or more volatile token pairs can advertise 50%, 100%, or even 1,000%+ APY." It also says yield farming returns can be wildly unpredictable. A one-year estimate at a fixed APY multiplies the amount by the rate. The calculator applies that sum only to the staking and stablecoin pool ranges. It leaves out the advertised 50%, 100% and 1,000%+ figures. A fixed-rate sum assumes the rate holds for a full year, and returns that can be wildly unpredictable may not do that.

## One-year estimate at a staking or stablecoin pool rate

Enter your own amount and pick a rate within GoMining's staking or stablecoin pool ranges to see one year's return at that APY.

Amount you stake or deposit (units)Assumption: Your own amount, in any token or currencyAPY within GoMining's ranges (%)

Return after one year**30 units**

__Worked examples (one-year return = amount × APY)__
| Amount you stake or deposit | APY within GoMining's ranges | Return after one year |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------- | --------------------- |
| 1,000 units | 3 % | **30 units** |
| 5,000 units | 3 % | **150 units** |
| 10,000 units | 3 % | **300 units** |

- The rate holds for a full year and is read as an APY.
- Staking on most major proof-of-stake networks: 3% to 12% APY. Stablecoin lending pools on established platforms: 2% to 10% APY. Both ranges are GoMining's.
- The advertised 50%, 100% and 1,000%+ figures are left out because GoMining says yield farming returns can be wildly unpredictable.

The result is a gross figure before gas fees, token price changes and tax, none of which the cited figures quantify.

## Why higher yield means higher risk

GoMining's rule for the trade-off is short: "in DeFi, higher yield almost always comes with higher risk." In its account, yield farming carries every risk staking has, plus several more. Blockchain Council [lists three yield farming risks](https://www.blockchain-council.org/defi/staking-vs-yield-farming-vs-liquidity-mining/?ref=zipmex.com). They are smart contract vulnerabilities, impermanent loss and sudden protocol changes. Each can lead to losses, it says.

## What staking can still cost you

Staking still has costs. GoMining notes that many staking protocols impose a wait before holders can withdraw. Ethereum shows what direct staking asks. According to ethereum.org, a validator of your own needs [at least 32 ether (ETH)](https://ethereum.org/staking/?ref=zipmex.com) and can hold up to 2048 ETH. A validator that goes offline misses rewards and loses small amounts of ETH.

## Where a beginner starts

Blockchain Council writes that staking is "generally considered to be the safest of the three investment options" it compares. The other two are yield farming and liquidity mining. Both involve moving assets between pools or supplying liquidity to them. A separate explainer covers [how to invest in crypto in 2026](https://zipmex.com/blog/how-to-navigate-crypto-in-2026-expert-strategies/).

## Analysis: where the staking and stablecoin pool ranges overlap

On GoMining's ranges, established stablecoin lending pools at 2% to 10% APY overlap with staking at 3% to 12%. On those figures, yield farming is not automatically the higher-paying choice. The far larger numbers in the guide are rates that newer protocols or more volatile token pairs can advertise. Its general rule still applies: in DeFi, a higher yield almost always means a higher risk. Time is the second difference. Staking fits a holder who will set a position and leave it. Yield farming fits one who will keep watching it, since its returns can be hard to predict.

## What these figures leave out

The rate ranges are GoMining's general figures with no as-of date in its text, so none is a current or promised rate. The sources do not state how long lock-ups last or how large offline penalties are.
