- Description: Crypto staking means locking coins you already own so a proof-of-stake blockchain can confirm transactions. See how rewards, lock-ups, slashing and tax work.

[Corporate Finance Institute](https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/cryptocurrency/crypto-staking/?ref=zipmex.com), an education site, defines crypto staking as locking up crypto you already own to earn rewards on a blockchain that uses proof-of-stake. The more coins a holder locks up, the higher the chance of being selected to validate a block. Staking does not apply to proof-of-work coins, the best-known being Bitcoin. TokenTax says that instead of mining, you can lock up or delegate tokens, which lets the network use them to help validate transactions.

**Key facts, per TokenTax**

- **Rewards:** Holders can earn crypto rewards for helping support a proof-of-stake chain.
- **Lock-up:** Unstaking typically means waiting through an unbonding or unlock phase.
- **Slashing:** The network might slash some of a validator's stake if it cheats or stays offline.
- **Tax:** For US taxes, staking rewards count as ordinary income once you can move or spend them.

## How validators and delegation work

[TokenTax says](https://tokentax.co/blog/staking-crypto?ref=zipmex.com) that a validator with more delegated tokens has better odds of being picked to produce blocks. A validator is the participant the network chooses for that job. Each block a validator produces pays rewards, which it shares with all of its delegators, the holders who delegated tokens to it.

## Where rewards come from

[Liquidityfinder](https://liquidityfinder.com/insight/crypto/a-detailed-guide-to-cryptocurrency-staking?ref=zipmex.com), a finance website, says staking locks your crypto to help secure a blockchain network and confirm transactions. It says rewards come from a few places, such as network inflation, meaning newly created coins, or transaction fees.

## Staking pools

[Fortunebuilders](https://www.fortunebuilders.com/p/crypto-staking/?ref=zipmex.com), a blog, says a staking pool groups holders' funds, which can improve their odds of earning rewards.

## Taxes on rewards in the United States

[TokenTax says](https://tokentax.co/blog/crypto-staking-taxes?ref=zipmex.com) that under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidance, a cash-method taxpayer includes a staking reward in gross income. The amount counted is the reward's fair market value.

[TokenTax says](https://tokentax.co/blog/crypto-staking-taxes?ref=zipmex.com) that under IRS guidance, the reward falls in the tax year the holder gains dominion and control over it. Once the reward can be moved or spent, its fair market value counts as ordinary income.

## What a reward is worth

TokenTax gives a [worked example](https://tokentax.co/blog/crypto-staking-taxes?ref=zipmex.com). Suppose a wallet shows a 0.0142 ETH reward at 2:06 pm, when ETH is worth $2,315\. The cost basis for that reward is $32.87\. To value your own reward, enter the number of tokens and the dollar price at the moment it became usable.

## Value of a staking reward

What is your staking reward worth in dollars when you can first move or spend it?

Tokens received as the reward (tokens)Assumption: Your own reward amount. The 0.0142 ETH figure is TokenTax's example.Dollar price of one token when the reward became usable (USD)

Ordinary income and cost basis**32.87 USD**

__Worked examples (ordinary income and cost basis = tokens × dollar price when the reward became usable)__
| Tokens received as the reward | Dollar price of one token when the reward became usable | Ordinary income and cost basis |
| ----------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| 0.0142 tokens | 2,315 USD | **32.87 USD** |
| 0.5 tokens | 2,315 USD | **1,157.5 USD** |
| 1 tokens | 2,315 USD | **2,315 USD** |

- The reward counts when the holder can move or spend it, as TokenTax describes.
- The price is the dollar value of one token at that moment.
- The 0.5 and 1 token rows are illustrative reader inputs, not source examples.

This applies TokenTax's United States example to your own numbers; it is not tax advice, and other countries' rules differ.

## What can go wrong

[Fortunebuilders](https://www.fortunebuilders.com/p/crypto-staking/?ref=zipmex.com), a blog, says a holder keeps ownership of staked coins and can unstake and sell them. It adds that most cryptocurrencies require a minimum staking time.

## Validator risk

[TokenTax says](https://tokentax.co/blog/staking-crypto?ref=zipmex.com) the network might slash some of a validator's stake if that validator cheats or cannot stay online consistently. [Corporate Finance Institute says](https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/cryptocurrency/crypto-staking/?ref=zipmex.com) stakers may also lose part of their stake if they fail to carry out validation duties, such as by going offline.

## Price risk

[TokenTax warns](https://tokentax.co/blog/staking-crypto?ref=zipmex.com) that high yields can be wiped out when a coin's price drops sharply while funds are locked. [Liquidityfinder gives an illustrative example](https://liquidityfinder.com/insight/crypto/a-detailed-guide-to-cryptocurrency-staking?ref=zipmex.com): a 10% annual percentage yield (APY) would not cover losses if the staked coin's price fell 50%.

## Where the coins are held

[TokenTax's platform guide](https://tokentax.co/blog/best-crypto-staking-platforms?ref=zipmex.com) says centralized platforms hide the technical details and take custody of your coins. Picking a venue comes down to three basics, including the real yield after fees and who controls your keys.

## Analysis: what the sources agree on

The sources agree on the core idea: locking coins to help a proof-of-stake network run, in return for rewards. They differ mainly in emphasis. Most name at least one cost, such as a lock-up, a penalty or a price fall. A price fall can cancel out the reward, as the illustrative example above shows. The sources are publishers' guides, not network or tax-authority texts. Some carry dates that conflict with their content, so check current rules before acting.
