CBDCs and decentralized finance occupy opposite architectural philosophies, but their development isn't independent. Central banks cite stablecoin growth and DeFi adoption as key motivators for CBDC research. If wholesale CBDCs eventually provide programmable settlement infrastructure, that layer could interact with DeFi protocols in ways that aren't yet fully defined. The more significant near-term effect is regulatory: CBDC development accelerates the regulatory frameworks being built around all digital assets, including DeFi and on-chain trading.
