Wormhole's W token rose about 15.5% in the week to September 7, 2026. It went from $0.00901 on August 31 to $0.01040 on September 7, by CoinGecko's daily 00:00 UTC snapshots. The gain came five weeks after W set its all-time low of $0.00782 on July 31, 2026, so it does not change the bigger picture: on September 7 the token was still about 99.4% below its $1.66 peak of April 3, 2024. By October 25, 2026, W traded at about $0.0120, roughly 15% above the September 7 level. All price figures here come from one data provider, CoinGecko.

Two ratios put the week in context. On September 7, W traded about 33% above its July 31 low. To get back to its 2024 high it would have to rise about 160 times.

Why the supply keeps rising

W unlocks a little at a time, not in yearly blocks. That explains why market cap and price can move differently.

On September 17, 2025, Wormhole announced "W 2.0" tokenomics on its official blog. The changes that matter for supply:

  • Bi-weekly unlocks from October 3, 2025. Four allocations moved from annual cliffs to bi-weekly releases over 4.5 years: Guardian Nodes (5.1%), Community & Launch (17%), Ecosystem & Incubation (31%) and Strategic Network Participants (11.6%).
  • Foundation Treasury (23.3%) stays on its original daily four-year schedule.
  • Core Contributors (12%) technically unlock bi-weekly to the Wormhole Foundation, where the tokens are held in escrow. The legal agreements keep the original annual schedule.
  • Investors and Guardian validators are locked for six more months, until October 2028.
  • No new minting. Total supply stays capped at 10 billion W.

The effect is visible in the numbers. When W 2.0 was announced, Wormhole put circulating supply at about 4.76 billion W (46.63%). On September 7, 2026, CoinGecko's market cap and price imply about 6.45 billion W. On October 25, 2026, CoinGecko listed 6.67 billion W in circulation. New tokens reach the market every two weeks, so a price gain only holds if demand grows fast enough to absorb each release.

How far is W from a reference price?

Enter a starting W price and a reference price from the article, or prices of your own, to see the percentage move between them.

Worked examples (change = (reference price ÷ starting price − 1) × 100)
Starting W priceReference W priceMove from starting price to reference price
0.00782 USD0.0104 USD33 %
0.0104 USD1.66 USD15,861.5 %
0.0104 USD0.012 USD15.4 %
  • Both prices are your inputs; the defaults and examples use CoinGecko figures quoted in the article: $0.00782 (July 31, 2026 low), $0.01040 (September 7, 2026), $0.0120 (October 25, 2026) and $1.66 (April 3, 2024 high).
  • A positive result is a rise from the starting price to the reference price; a negative result is a fall.

This is arithmetic on two prices only: it does not account for the bi-weekly unlocks that keep adding supply, and it cannot show whether or when W will reach any price.

The Reserve and staking yield

The same announcement introduced two demand-side measures:

  • Wormhole Reserve. This is a strategic reserve held in W. It is funded by onchain and offchain revenue from Wormhole, Wormhole Portal and ecosystem applications. In September 2025 Wormhole described it as "coming soon".
  • 4% targeted base yield. It goes to holders who stake W for governance, and Portal Earn points can raise it. Wormhole says the rewards are variable, not guaranteed, and may change or stop. It calls them emissions, not interest, and says they give no right to protocol revenue.

What to watch

  • The bi-weekly unlock dates. Compare circulating supply with market cap after each release.
  • Reserve disclosures from Wormhole. A published reserve balance would be the first hard evidence of revenue reaching the token.
  • The July 31 low of $0.00782. It is the most recent reference point the market has printed.
