Ronin Wallet Guide: Setup, Addresses, Fees and Bridging

How to set up Ronin Wallet, back it up, fund it from Ethereum and pay gas in RON, plus what changed when Ronin became an Ethereum Layer 2 in May 2026.

Ronin Wallet is Sky Mavis's non-custodial wallet for the Ronin chain, the network built for Axie Infinity and other blockchain games. It comes as a mobile app for iOS and Android and as a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. To set it up, install it from an official store listing published by Sky Mavis. Then choose either a 12-word recovery phrase or an email or social login protected by a recovery password, and back up that secret, because nobody can restore it for you. Most transactions cost a small gas fee in RON. Free gas for ordinary users ended on 9 October 2024. The newest change came on 12 May 2026, when Ronin moved from an independent sidechain to an Ethereum Layer 2. Reports say users did not need to do anything with their wallets.

What changed most recently

May 2026: Ronin became an Ethereum Layer 2

On 12 May 2026 Ronin hard-forked at block 55,577,490. It went from an independent EVM sidechain to an Ethereum Layer 2 built on the OP Stack, according to Blockchain Gamer and The Block. The network paused for about 10 hours during the upgrade. Transfers, swaps, smart contract calls and onchain game actions stopped until it finished. Blockchain Gamer quoted Sky Mavis co-founder Jihoz as saying wallet holders did not need to act. Reported partners include Optimism, Conduit, Boundless and EigenLayer. EigenDA handles data availability, and Ethereum provides settlement and finality. The upgrade also cut RON's annual inflation from above 20% to below 1%, The Block reported.

February 2024: addresses switched from "ronin:" to "0x"

Older guides tell you to replace "0x" with "ronin:" when you send funds. That advice is out of date. On 2 February 2024 Ronin started showing addresses with the 0x prefix. The official blog called the change "100% aesthetic", said no action was needed and said Sky Mavis apps would keep accepting the ronin: prefix on the back end. Ronin's support centre adds one warning: the same 0x string on Ronin and on Ethereum points to two separate wallets. Check which network you are sending on before you confirm.

October 2024: free gas ended

The Sky Mavis validator used to process free transactions for new wallet users and some Axie and Land holders. Ronin's blog said on 2 October 2024 that this would stop on 9 October 2024. Since then, non-sponsored transactions cost about 0.01 RON in gas, which the post put at roughly $0.02. Game studios can still pay their players' gas through Ronin Waypoint sponsored transactions. These need two signatures, one from the user and one from the sponsor. The "100 free transactions a day" figure in older guides no longer applies.

Choosing how to secure the wallet

Ronin Wallet offers two ways to create a wallet, and you cannot switch from one to the other later.

Recovery phrase walletEmail / social login (MPC) wallet
What you back up12-word secret recovery phraseA recovery password you choose
AddressesCan create severalOne address per email or social account
If the secret is lostFunds cannot be recoveredFunds cannot be recovered; Sky Mavis cannot reset the password
Reuse after lossNot applicableThe same email or social account cannot be used to recreate the wallet

Ronin's support centre says the recovery phrase is generated on your device and is never held by Sky Mavis or Axie Infinity. That is why a lost phrase cannot be recovered. Restoring an email wallet also will not bring back addresses from a lost phrase wallet, because the two methods are separate.

How to create a Ronin Wallet

  1. Install from an official listing. Sky Mavis's developer docs list the wallet on the Google Play Store, the Apple App Store, the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons. Check that the publisher is Sky Mavis. Some third-party pages use addresses that imitate Ronin's support site, so do not install from links on those pages.
  2. Pick a creation method. Choose the recovery phrase or an email or social login (see the table above).
  3. Set device security. On mobile, Ronin's support guide describes setting a passcode and optionally turning on biometric unlock. If you skip biometrics, the app sets up a PIN, which also approves actions inside the wallet.
  4. Back up the secret. For a phrase wallet, write down the 12 words. The app then asks you to confirm some of them before it finishes. Support says you can back up manually or to a cloud service. For an email wallet, store the recovery password somewhere safe.
  5. Find your address. Your address starts with 0x and is shown at the top of the wallet. You can also register an RNS name ending in .ron and give that out instead.

If you hold larger balances, Trezor publishes a guide to using Ronin Wallet with its hardware wallets.

Can you get back into your Ronin Wallet?

Answer two questions about how you set up your wallet to see what your backup can and cannot restore.

  1. How did you create your Ronin Wallet?

  2. Do you still have your 12-word recovery phrase?

  3. Do you still have your recovery password?

Your phrase is your only backup

The recovery phrase is generated on your device and is never held by Sky Mavis or Axie Infinity, so nobody else can restore it for you. A phrase wallet can hold several addresses. Keep the phrase safe and install the wallet only from an official listing published by Sky Mavis.

Funds cannot be recovered

Because Sky Mavis never holds the recovery phrase, a lost phrase cannot be recovered. Restoring or creating an email or social login wallet will not bring back addresses from the lost phrase wallet, because the two methods are separate.

Your password is your only backup

An email or social login wallet has one address per email or social account, and Sky Mavis cannot reset the recovery password. Keep the password stored somewhere safe. You cannot switch this wallet to a recovery phrase later.

Funds cannot be recovered

Sky Mavis cannot reset a lost recovery password, so the funds cannot be recovered. The same email or social account cannot be used to recreate the wallet.

This covers only the two ways to back up a Ronin Wallet: it does not cover hardware wallets, cannot check your device or whether an app or site is genuine, and is not a recovery service.

Funding the wallet from Ethereum

The official Ronin Bridge at app.roninchain.com/bridge moves ERC-20 tokens and NFTs between Ethereum and Ronin. To deposit a token, follow the Ronin docs:

  1. Open Ronin Bridge. In the From field, connect the Ethereum wallet that holds the tokens.
  2. In the To field, enter your Ronin address or your full RNS name, including ".ron".
  3. Choose the token and the amount, or press Max to send your whole balance.
  4. Select Deposit and sign in your Ethereum wallet. You pay this gas in ETH, so keep enough ETH in the Ethereum wallet.
  5. When "Deposit completed" appears, check the Funds tab in the extension or the Tokens tab in the mobile app.

On mobile, the docs say you must import your Ethereum address into the Ronin Wallet app first. How long a deposit takes depends on Ethereum congestion and the gas you pay. NFTs follow a separate deposit guide.

Sending tokens on Ronin

Open the wallet, choose Send, enter the recipient's 0x address or .ron name, pick the asset and amount, review the details and confirm. Keep some RON in the wallet for gas, unless a game or app is sponsoring the transaction.

Using the wallet with games

The wallet connects to Ronin apps in two ways. In a browser, the extension injects a Ronin provider that works with Web3 standards. On mobile, it uses deep links and the Reown protocol. Connected apps can read your address and ask you to sign transactions and messages. You approve each signature yourself.

Why bridge security matters on Ronin

On 29 March 2022 Ronin reported that funds had been stolen from the Ronin Bridge. In April 2022 the FBI said its investigation had confirmed that Lazarus Group and APT38, cyber actors associated with North Korea, were responsible for the theft of $620 million in Ethereum. Press reports say the attackers used compromised validator keys. The May 2026 Layer 2 migration retired the validator-run sidechain design that was in place at the time. That does not make every bridge or app safe, so connect your wallet only to apps you have checked.
